Join me again this year as I provide instructions for how to make a different quilt block each month. Eventually, all these blocks will turn into a great quilt! For the month of February, we are making the Square in a Square Quilt Block in this quick tutorial.
This is a fun block to make scrappy!
For a 12 inch finished block (12.5 inch unfinished), you will need to cut the following:
Light Color (Centers)
- 4 of 4 3/4 x 4 3/4 inch squares
Dark Color
- 4 of 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch squares
White
- 4 of 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch squares
Start by cutting the 4 1/2 inch squares in half on the diagonal.
To create a reference line, press each of the center squares in half. Center the long side of a dark color triangle on the edge of the center square. The point of the triangle should line up with the crease. Sew in place, making sure not to stretch the seams. Press towards the triangles.
Repeat on all sides of the center square.
Trim each Square in a Square to 6 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches. Make sure to keep 1/4 inch away from the points of the center square.
Layout the squares to match the picture and stitch them together in rows. Stitch the rows together. Press.

(This is classic block that has been designed by many people but these instructions are written by me.)
Have fun quilting!
