How to Make the Ohio Star Quilt Block
This year, for the quilt guild I am apart of, I am providing instructions for how to make a different quilt block each month. For the month of December, we learned about the classic Ohio Star Quilt Block.
This is a very classic block that great for everyone to know how to do.
For a 12 inch finished block (12.5 inch unfinished), you will need to cut the following:
White 4 of 3 1/2 inch squares
White 6 of 4 inch squares
Color 6 of 4 inch squares
Sew:
Using the 4 inch squares, place a white square and a color square right sides together. Draw a line diagonally, corner to corner on the white fabric.
Stitch a scant 1/4 inch away from the line on both sides.
Cut on the line and press the seam to the dark side.
Trim to 3 1/2 inches square.
Repeat till you have 12 half square triangles.
Arrange the half square triangles and the 3 1/2 inch white squares to match the layout of the square.
Stitch blocks together to form rows. Press to alternating sides. Then stitch rows together and give an overall final pressing.

Check back each month for a new How-To of quilt blocks! To see the other blocks, just search my blog for Quilt Guild Block of the Month.

This is classic block that has been designed and created by many people. As I have mentioned before, these block designs come from the book 5500 Quilt Block Designs by Maggie Malone. (c) 2003 but these instructions are written by me.)
Have fun quilting!
Can you post how many blocks and how many yards are needed for bed sizes. Your description on making the block is easy to understand. My 2 favorite blocks are Ohio Star and Log Cabin.
Hey Di!
Thanks for asking! The photo of the block is cropped a bit. There is a 1/4 inch seam allowance around the block before the points, so you shouldn’t loose them when you sew the blocks together. Good question!
I think my question may seem pretty stupid, but when you join the completed blocks, don’t you lose the points? Maybe I’ve missed something?
Hey Michelle, I am sorry I accidentally deleted your comment. But this is how to calculate how to make different size blocks. This block is easily separated into 4 sections up and down and side to side. So if you want a 16 inch block. You will divide the total size you want into the number of sections there are. 16 divided by 4. So each square will be 4 inches square. Then add your seam allowance. So your squares and HSTs will need to measure 4 1/2 inches square.
I hope that helps!
Hi Amee!
To make a 6 inch finished block you will need these pieces:
White 4 of 2 inch squares
White 6 of 3 inch squares
Color 6 of 3 inch squares
Follow the directions in the blog post, just make sure your HSTs are trimmed to 2 inches square.
Thanks for asking!
