How to Make the Honeymoon Quilt Block

Join me this year as I provide instructions for how to make a different quilt block each month. Eventually, all these blocks will turn into a great quilt! For the month of November, we are making the Honeymoon Quilt Block.

Honeymoon Quilt Block in Dark blue, light blue, and white

This block is a fun meld of quarter square triangles and half square triangles. I love how fancy it is!

For a 12 inch finished block (12.5 inch unfinished), you will need to cut the following:

Light Color

- 1 of 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch square

- 4 of 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch squares

Dark Color

- 4 of 3 x 3 inch squares

- 2 of 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inch squares

White

- 2 of 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inch squares

- 4 of 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch squares

- 4 of 3 x 3 inch squares

Squares of fabric cut out to make the quilt block

Sew

Make the half square triangles (HST).

On the back of the white 3 inch squares, draw a diagonal line, corner to corner.

Pin a dark color - 3 inch square to the white square, right sides together.

Stitch on both sides of the drawn line, a scant 1/4 inch away. I like to chain piece this step.

Cut on the drawn line, and press to the color side.

Trim to be 2 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches each.

Next, make the quarter square triangles (QST).

The first steps are the same as making half square triangles.

On the back of the white 5 1/2 inch squares, draw a diagonal line, corner to corner.  Pin a dark color - 5 1/2 inch square to the white square, right sides together.

Stitch on both sides of the drawn line, a scant 1/4 inch away. Cut on the drawn line, and press to the color side.

First steps of the QSTs

Match two HSTs together, right sides together at the seams, matching a color side to a white side.

Matching HSTs together

Draw a line, corner to corner, perpendicular to the seams.

Drawn line perpendicular to seams

Stitch on both sides of the drawn line, a scant 1/4 inch away. Cut on the drawn line.

Press. Trim to 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches square.

Progress shot

Create the corner block using two HSTs, a white 2 1/2 inch square, and a light blue 2 1/2 inch square. Lay them out as shown in the picture and stitch together.

Layout the QSTs, the corner blocks and the remaining 4 1/2 inch light color squares to match the picture of the whole block and stitch them together in rows. Press. Then, stitch the rows together. Press.
