How to Make the Churn Dash Quilt Block

Join me this year as I provide instructions for how to make a different quilt block each month. Eventually, all these blocks will turn into a great quilt! For the month of March, we are making the Churn Dash Quilt Block.

Churn Dash Quilt Block - made with white and dark blue fabric prints

For a 12 inch finished block (12.5 inch unfinished), you will need to cut the following:

Background (White)

1 of 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch squares

4 of 4 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch rectangles

2 of 5 x 5 inch squares

Color (Blue)

 2 of 5 x 5 inch squares

4 of 4 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch rectangle s

Sew

Make the half square triangles.

On the back of the white 5 inch squares, draw a diagonal line, corner to corner.

You need a white and blue square

Pin a color 5 inch square to the white square, right sides together.

Stitch on both sides of the drawn line, a scant 1/4 inch away. Cut on the drawn line, and press to the color side.

Making half square triangles

Trim to be 4 1/2 inches by 4 1/2 inches. Repeat with the other 5 inch squares.

Match up a 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch color rectangle with a white rectangle of the same size. Stitch them together along a long side of the rectangle. Press to the color side. This will create the side center squares and the top and bottom center squares.
